How we counted

The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. A political district counts with its towns in the area only. The trips by public transport come from the timetables of the Mobilitätsverbünde Österreich, with the walks on the paths of OpenStreetMap. By public transport, 496,045 addresses have a time, and the others lack a trip before 16:00. Noise comes from the strategic noise maps 2022 of the BMLUK, which cover the major roads in Lower Austria and Burgenland, and the side streets carry an estimate. Flood areas come from the flood risk zones of the BMLUK, nitrogen dioxide and the air from the models of the European Environment Agency, and shops, doctors and schools from OpenStreetMap. Noise and air are model values, and the distances to the errands are as the crow flies. The data is as of 23 October 2026.

Around Vienna, LAGE follows the village rule. Its time to Vienna takes the better of public transport and car, the drive × 1.5 plus 5 minutes to park, scored from 20 to 120 minutes, and errands count in full within 2 km and by half up to 4 km. So the LAGE around Vienna stands on its own, separate from the LAGE of the cities. The story Living around Vienna and commuting to Vienna, in figures describes the whole area, The best places to live around Vienna, town by town ranks the single towns, and The best districts of Vienna to live in, by the LAGE score answers the same question for the city. Rents and prices stay out of LAGE. The score describes the location.

Every figure in this story comes from the same open data as the maps and address pages of Lagecheck, counted per address from the address register. The data stands as of 23 October 2026.
