How we counted
The noise maps come from the federal ministry BMLUK, which publishes them for roads, railways, airports and industry under the EU Environmental Noise Directive. This story counts road traffic only. The maps model the noise as Lden, an average over day, evening and night in which evening noise carries 5 dB and night noise 10 dB extra, and they draw it in bands from 55 dB upward. Below 55 dB therefore means below the lowest mapped band. The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has.
The report of each address shows the loudest facade, and the method explains how quiet enters LAGE. On your priorities you weight quiet against public transport and green space. The profile of Salzburg sets road noise beside flood areas, public transport and parks.
