The best areas to live in St. Pölten, by the LAGE score

Ragelsdorf has the highest LAGE of the 41 cadastral communities of St. Pölten, a median of 72 across 259 addresses, against 62 for the whole city, and Viehofen follows with 70 across 803. LAGE is our score from 0 to 100 for a place to live. Spratzern, the community with the most addresses, has 66 across 1,591. Among the 46 neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses, the Rennbahnstraße area leads with 80.

LAGE, a score from 0 to 100, sums up an address as a place to live: quiet, clean air, public transport, green space and errands on foot. Natural hazards such as floods lower it. We work it out for each address in St. Pölten with the same rules, from open data. For each place, the tables give the median, the score of the address in the middle once all of them are lined up. The data names the cadastral community of an address, such as Viehofen, Spratzern or Harland, and leaves the field empty for a large central part of the city, about a third of all addresses. The neighbourhoods are statistical areas of Statistik Austria, each named after a street inside it, and the comparison keeps those with at least 60 addresses. The map of St. Pölten shows every neighbourhood.

14,748 addresses. 41 cadastral communities. 46 neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses. A city median of 62.

Ragelsdorf and Viehofen reach the top on different parts. Ragelsdorf has 94 for green space and 50 for public transport, below the 65 of the city. Viehofen has 78 for transit and 78 for green space. Which parts of St. Pölten have the lowest LAGE score?

Wasserburg has the lowest median of the cadastral communities, 23 across 37 addresses, and Nadelbach and Pummersdorf share 24. The communities at the end of the ranking are small. From Dörfl with 28 to Wasserburg with 23, each counts 37 addresses or fewer, and each has 5 for public transport, between 0 and 7 for errands and between 65 and 97 for green space. Reitzersdorf counts 2 addresses and Wolfenberg 4, so these medians rest on very few addresses.

Harland and Unterradlberg show the same pattern on a larger scale. Harland has 90 for green space and 24 for errands and reaches a median of 56 across 478 addresses. Unterradlberg has 95 and 19 and reaches 51 across 317. LAGE combines the five parts in a geometric mean, so a low part pulls the score down further than a high part lifts it. Both lie far above the city median of 61 for green space and below the city median of 62 for LAGE.

Which neighbourhoods of St. Pölten have the highest LAGE score?

Among the 46 neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses, the Rennbahnstraße area has the highest median, 80 across 73 addresses. Two neighbourhoods at the top of the table lie in Viehofen. The Mühlweg area has 71 across 213 addresses and the Austinstraße area 70 across 589, the most addresses of the ten, with 88 for green space. For the other eight, the data leaves the cadastral community empty, as it does for the whole central part of the city. Three neighbourhoods share the median of 70, and the table shows two of them. The third is the Robiniengasse area in Ragelsdorf, with 352 addresses. The profile of St. Pölten lists the neighbourhoods at the other end.

Do the best areas of St. Pölten all lie near a good stop?

The two highest neighbourhoods do, and Ragelsdorf, the highest cadastral community, scores below the city median for public transport. The Wiener Straße area has 100 % of its addresses in public transport class A or B, the two best classes of the ÖROK scale, and the Rennbahnstraße area 98.6 %. Five of the ten neighbourhoods with the highest shares are also among the ten highest by LAGE. In the whole city, 14.8 % of addresses lie in these classes, 2,179 of 14,748, and most of them lie in the central part with an empty cadastral community. The Birkengasse / Steinfeldstraße area in Spratzern has 57.9 %, the highest share of a neighbourhood with a named community.

Ragelsdorf shows another way to a high score. The Robiniengasse area there has a LAGE median of 70 and 0 % of its addresses in class A or B. Addresses in the lower classes still earn part of the transit score, and Ragelsdorf has a median of 50 for it. A high LAGE can rest on green space and errands on foot as well as on a stop close by.

The story on errands in St. Pölten counts the supermarkets, doctors and schools close to each address, and the profile of St. Pölten sets LAGE beside noise, air and flood areas.

Can I weight the parts myself?

The profile page lets you set your own priorities for the five parts. The standard LAGE weights them equally. If the bus stop matters more to you than the park, give it more weight, and the map of St. Pölten colours every neighbourhood by your own LAGE. The method page gives the rule for each part.

How we counted

The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. Road noise comes from the strategic noise maps 2022 of the federal ministry BMLUK, and for side streets the quiet part is an estimate. The flood areas come from the same ministry. The air comes from the model of the European Environment Agency, public transport from the ÖV-Güteklassen 2025 of the ÖROK, and parks, shops, doctors and schools from OpenStreetMap. Noise and air are model values, and distances are as the crow flies. The data is as of 12 October 2026.

The cadastral communities appear with all their addresses, however few, and the addresses with an empty cadastral community stay outside their table. The neighbourhood figures cover the 46 neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses. Rents, prices and safety stay out of LAGE. The score describes the location.

Every figure in this story comes from the same open data as the maps and address pages of Lagecheck, counted per address from the address register. The data stands as of 12 October 2026.
