The Brunngasse and Wiener Straße areas have the best public transport in St. Pölten, with all of their addresses in public transport class A or B, the two best official classes. In the Wiener Straße area, the noise map also puts every address below 65 dB of road noise. Austria's official public transport classes, the ÖV-Güteklassen of ÖROK, grade every place by the stops nearby. Each stop gets a category from its kind of service and from how often it runs on weekdays. Around the stop, the classes run from A, the best, to G, and the class drops as the distance to the stop grows. For each address in St. Pölten, we take the class it lies in and count the share of addresses in class A or B. The neighbourhoods Lagecheck compares are statistical areas of Statistik Austria, each named after a street inside it, and we rank the ones with at least 60 addresses.

How we counted

The ÖV-Güteklassen 2025 come from ÖROK, the Austrian Conference on Spatial Planning, and AustriaTech publishes them. The classes rate the weekday service at each stop, so evening and weekend timetables stay out of the count. They measure the distance to the stop as the crow flies. Road noise comes from the strategic noise maps of 2022 of the federal ministry BMLUK, a model of road traffic that gives the expected level at the facade. In St. Pölten the noise maps cover the main roads, so an address away from them counts below 65 dB, and quiet on the side streets is an estimate. The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. The data dates from 12 October 2026.

The address register names a locality for many addresses in St. Pölten, such as Spratzern, Harland or Eggendorf. For most addresses in many neighbourhoods the locality field in the data stays empty, among them the first nine of the transit table. A table by locality leaves these places out. The neighbourhood ranking covers them all.

The method explains how public transport and quiet enter LAGE. Under your priorities, you can give public transport more weight, and the neighbourhood finder then ranks the neighbourhoods of St. Pölten by those priorities. Living in St. Pölten gives the other measures for the whole city, and the story on errands in St. Pölten sets public transport beside supermarkets, doctors and primary schools. The story on the best areas to live in St. Pölten sets public transport beside the LAGE score.

Every figure in this story comes from the same open data as the maps and address pages of Lagecheck, counted per address from the address register. The data stands as of 12 October 2026.
