LAGE, a score from 0 to 100, sums up an address as a place to live: quiet, clean air, public transport, green space and errands on foot. Natural hazards such as floods lower it. We work it out for every address in Wels with the same rules, from open data. For each place, the tables give the median, the score of the address in the middle once all of them are lined up. The neighbourhoods Lagecheck compares are statistical areas of Statistik Austria, each named after a street inside it, and we rank the 52 with at least 60 addresses. The address register also names a locality for most addresses, such as Pernau, Laahen or Oberthan. The map of Wels shows every neighbourhood.
11,390 addresses. 52 neighbourhoods compared. 36 localities.

The table shows the first ten and the last ten of the 52 neighbourhoods, with the median of each part. At both cuts a tie runs on, at 64 near the top and at 53 near the foot, so more neighbourhoods share these medians than the table lists. The profile of Wels ranks the 36 localities, with Pernau first at a median of 66.
What do the neighbourhoods with the highest LAGE score in Wels have in common?
The two leaders combine short walks for errands with green space well above the city median, and their quiet matches the city. The Gärtnerstraße area has 89 for errands on foot and 85 for quiet, and the Oberfeldstraße / Leo-Fall-Straße area has 91 and 86, against city medians of 85 for both. For green space the two have 66 and 69, while the city median is 43. Public transport is the weaker part of the Gärtnerstraße area, with 50 against 65 for the city. In the Oberfeldstraße / Leo-Fall-Straße area, every part lies at or above the city median. Balance carries it to the top.
The next places reach their score in other ways. The Edelweißstraße area has 78 for public transport and 46 for air. The Eferdinger Straße area has 90 for public transport, the highest of the twenty in the table, and the public transport story for Wels ranks every neighbourhood by it. The Eferdinger Straße area also has 99 for errands on foot, with 39 for air and 75 for quiet. The Hydenstraße area has 91 for green space. Each of them pairs one or two strong parts with a weaker one.
Which neighbourhoods of Wels have the lowest LAGE score?
The Vogelweiderstraße area, mostly in Oberthan, has the lowest median of the 52, 39 across 101 addresses. The Zimnitzstraße area in Niederthan follows with 41 across 145 addresses. Two areas share 42, the Stadlhofstraße area, mostly in Stadlhof, with 283 addresses and the Roithenstraße area, mostly in Roithen, with 84.
All four score 93 to 97 for green space, more than twice the city median. Their low part is errands on foot, from 5 in the Vogelweiderstraße area to 12 in the Zimnitzstraße area, against 85 for the city. Public transport runs from 25 to 50. The Zimnitzstraße area also has 87 for quiet and 71 for air, the highest air median of the twenty in the table. The Vogelweiderstraße area has the lowest quiet of the four, 59, and the profile of Wels gives the share of loud addresses in this area.
LAGE combines the five parts as a geometric mean, so one low part weighs more than in a plain average. A green and quiet street far from the shops ends up below a street where every part reaches the middle. At the foot of the table, errands are the lowest part.
Does a park nearby lift the LAGE score of an area in Wels?
A park nearby lifts one of the five parts of LAGE, green space, and the other four keep their full weight. Laahen has 0 % of its addresses within 300 m of a park and a median of 65, with 95 for errands and 57 for green space. A high share of addresses near a park and a high score are two separate things.

The table covers the addresses with a named locality. Where the data leaves the locality empty, as for most of the Eferdinger Straße area, the addresses stay out of it. The green part of LAGE counts green and open land within 300 m, fields and forests included, and the distance to the nearest park or forest, so it reaches further than the share of addresses near a park.
Can I weight the parts myself?
The profile page lets you set your own priorities for the five parts. The standard LAGE weights them equally. If the shop on the corner matters more to you than the field behind the house, give errands more weight, and the map of Wels colours every neighbourhood by your own LAGE. The neighbourhood finder ranks the neighbourhoods by the same priorities, and the method page gives the rule for each part.
How we counted
The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. Road noise comes from the strategic noise maps 2022 of the federal ministry BMLUK, and flood areas come from the same ministry. In Wels the noise maps cover the main roads, so quiet on the side streets is an estimate. The air comes from the model of the European Environment Agency, public transport from the ÖV-Güteklassen 2025 of the ÖROK, and parks, shops, doctors and schools from OpenStreetMap. Noise and air are model values, and distances are as the crow flies. Only parks count as parks, and forests count separately. The data is as of 12 October 2026.
The neighbourhood ranking covers the 52 neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses, and the park table covers the addresses with a named locality. Rents, prices and safety stay out of LAGE. The score describes the location.
