Vienna's loudest districts and neighbourhoods by road noise

Neubau has the largest share of loud addresses of Vienna's 23 districts, with 63.5 % of its addresses at 65 dB or more at the loudest facade, against 23.6 % across Vienna. Alsergrund follows with 54.2 % and Brigittenau with 54 %, and Donaustadt has the smallest share, 9.7 %. By count, Liesing has the most loud addresses, 3,030.

The strategic noise maps of 2022 cover every street in Vienna, so we can read the road noise at each address of the city. For each address, we take the loudest band of road noise across the building's facades. From 65 dB on, an address counts as loud. We then count the loud addresses in each district and in each neighbourhood.

150,513 addresses. 23 districts. 35,459 loud addresses.

Across Vienna, 23.6 % of the addresses are loud, roughly one address in four. Six districts lie below this share: Liesing, Hernals, Penzing, Floridsdorf, Hietzing and Donaustadt. All the others lie above it. Donaustadt has the smallest share, 9.7 %, and the quietest districts of Vienna look at that end of the scale.

Which district of Vienna has the most loud addresses by count?

Liesing has the most loud addresses, 3,030, or 8.5 % of all 35,459 loud addresses in Vienna. Its share of 22.7 % lies close to the share of the city as a whole, 23.6 %. Favoriten follows with 2,780 loud addresses at a share of 26.7 %. Donaustadt has the most addresses of all districts, 24,796, so its small share still covers more loud addresses, 2,394, than the large share of Neubau with 1,100. The count and the share name different districts.

How we counted

The noise maps come from the federal ministry BMLUK, which publishes them under the EU Environmental Noise Directive. This story counts road traffic only, and railways, airports and industry stay out of it. The maps give the noise as Lden, an average over day, evening and night in which evening noise carries 5 dB and night noise 10 dB extra. The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. The neighbourhoods are statistical areas of Statistik Austria, each named after a street inside it.

The report of each address shows its loudest facade, and the map of Vienna shows the noise of each neighbourhood. The method explains how noise enters LAGE, and on the page for your priorities you weight quiet against public transport and green space.

Every figure in this story comes from the same open data as the maps and address pages of Lagecheck, counted per address from the address register. The data stands as of 24 October 2026.
