Across Vienna's 150,513 addresses the median LAGE, our score from 0 to 100 for a place to live, is 65, and by district it runs from 70 in Hietzing to 50 in Neubau. 68.8 % of the addresses lie in public transport class A or B, 73.8 % have a supermarket within 500 m, 23.6 % have road noise of 65 dB or more and 0.5 % lie in a 30- or 100-year flood area.
For each address in Vienna, we look up the road noise at the loudest facade, the air, the stops nearby, the nearest park and the shops, doctors and schools within walking distance. LAGE, a score from 0 to 100, sums these up in five parts, quiet, air, transit, green and errands, and flood areas lower it. The neighbourhoods we compare are statistical areas of Statistik Austria, each named after a street inside it, and we rank the ones with at least 60 addresses.
150,513 addresses. 23 districts. 1,365 neighbourhoods, 737 of them ranked.

The districts 1 to 9 reach 100 for transit and 100 for errands, and their air medians lie between 20 and 35. Neubau has 32 for quiet and 20 for air, the lowest figures of all districts. The part medians show where a district gains and loses, and its LAGE median comes from the full score of each address, a geometric mean in which one weak part weighs more than in a plain average. Hernals shows the difference. Its part medians match or pass those of Hietzing on four of the five parts, and its LAGE median is 62. The story on the best districts of Vienna goes through the ranking district by district.
Among the 737 ranked neighbourhoods, the Ilse-Arlt-Straße area in Donaustadt has the highest LAGE, 84, and the Währinger Gürtel / Lustkandlgasse area in Alsergrund the lowest, 32. Each figure belongs to one neighbourhood only. The map of Vienna colours every neighbourhood by its LAGE.

Your own LAGE
The standard LAGE weighs its five parts equally. If the tram matters more to you than the park, set your own priorities, and the map of Vienna colours every neighbourhood by your own LAGE.
How we counted
The address register of the BEV gives every address, and each address counts once, however many flats it has. Road noise comes from the strategic noise maps 2022 of the federal ministry BMLUK, as Lden at the loudest facade, and flood areas from the flood risk zones of the BMLUK. The air figures come from the models of the European Environment Agency, public transport from the ÖROK classes 2025, and parks and shops from OpenStreetMap and the city's directories. The data is from 12 October 2026.
The city figures count every address, and the rankings keep the neighbourhoods with at least 60 addresses. The noise figure belongs to the loudest facade, and a flat facing a courtyard can lie in a quieter band. The method explains each part of LAGE.
